Naxos: International Scientific Meeting on Coastal Erosion and the Future of Coasts

The 5th IAG DENUCHANGE Workshop is taking place on the island, focusing on geomorphology and landscape evolution with the co-organization of the Laguna Coast Foundation.
The 5th IAG DENUCHANGE Workshop, an international scientific meeting that began on Tuesday, October 6, and concludes on Friday, October 9, 2026, is currently underway in Naxos. The event is organized by the DENUCHANGE working group of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG), co-organized by the Laguna Coast Foundation, bringing together researchers specialized in geomorphology and landscape evolution.
At the core of the workshop are the processes of weathering, erosion, and mass movements of soil and rocks in both terrestrial and coastal environments. The program includes oral presentations, scientific posters, practical training on Virtual Field Trips, and a two-day field trip on October 8 and 9. According to an announcement by Niki Evelpidou, the field trip will follow a route from the interior of Naxos to its coastlines, examining natural hazards and coastal dynamics.
The presentation "From Sustainable Tourism to Regenerative Island Development: The Laguna Pilot Model" is also featured, exploring the connection between tourism, research, and ecosystem restoration. Antonis Pittaras, founder of the Laguna Coast Foundation, noted that the objective is to measure and test this concept in practice with the international scientific community, treating Laguna as a pilot site for vulnerable island environments.
