Santorini: The Caldera takes centre stage for Ifaisteia 2026
The annual recreation of a volcanic eruption returns to Santorini after sunset.
Santorini's Caldera takes centre stage on the evening of September 19 for the Ifaisteia 2026 event.
According to the Municipality of Thira, lights and special effects will recreate a volcanic eruption after sunset. The display is designed to be visible from several parts of the island.
The event began in 1991 and links a modern cultural programme with Santorini's geological history.
The volcano's most recent actual eruption occurred in 1950. This year's event uses a night-time recreation to revisit that historical memory.
The event is supported by the Municipality of Thira, GEOTHIRA and the Loula and Evangelos Nomikos Foundation.
