The 'Santorinia' of Koronos: The Musical Keepsake from the Construction of the Anegyrida Bridge

A traditional drum left by workers from Santorini in the late 19th century connects the history of Koronos bridge with local musical tradition.
Between 1890 and 1900, a stone bridge was built in Koronos, Naxos, to connect the neighborhood of Anegyrida with Platsa and the rest of the village. The project was carried out by a crew of workers from Santorini who resided in the village for the duration of the construction and brought musical instruments with them.
Upon completion of the bridge, one of the workers gifted his traditional drum to Ioannis Em. Fakinos (known as 'Geros Barperis'). The instrument, named 'Santorinia' due to its origin, was later passed down to his grandson, Ioannis Em. Fakinos ('Barperogiannis'), who used it to play music at local events for decades.
The instrument was subsequently given to Manolis I. Fakinos ('Faskianomanolis'). The historical account of the instrument's journey through time was preserved by the page 'Oreinos Axotis'.
