Syros Mayor Intervenes Over Local Tax Office Restructuring, Demands Audit Sub-Directorate

The Mayor of Syros-Ermoupoli requests a review of plans to transfer auditing responsibilities to Attica.
The Mayor of Syros - Ermoupoli, Alexis Athanasiou, has sent a letter requesting a review of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue's restructuring plan regarding the Syros Tax Office. The intervention addresses the proposed transfer of auditing responsibilities to the 1st Audit Center of Attica and the operation of only a single Audit Department in Syros, without establishing a Sub-directorate.
The Mayor proposes the creation of an Audit Sub-directorate based in Syros to maintain a strong local auditing structure. Additionally, he suggests evaluating the possibility of placing the supervision of the Mytilene Tax Office's auditing work under this new unit, citing existing operational cooperation between the two offices.
In his letter, he invokes the constitutional principle of island status and points to the risks of further understaffing. He also references the operational effectiveness of the Syros Tax Office based on 2026 service data despite current staffing shortages. No decision has been made by the revenue authority regarding any changes to the current plan.
