Real Estate: Only One in Four Property Purchases in Greece Funded by Mortgage

In Greece, the percentage of property transactions financed by bank loans stands at 23%, compared to 45% in Europe, despite an increase in disbursements in recent years.
Only one in four real estate transactions in Greece is completed with the assistance of a mortgage. According to data from IMS Financial Consulting, the share of transactions funded via bank lending in the country is 23%. This figure lags significantly behind the European average of 45%, which is nearly double that of Greece.
These statistics indicate that the domestic property market continues to rely heavily on buyers' own equity. Nonetheless, mortgage lending is showing signs of recovery, with annual loan disbursements rising from 594 million euros in 2020 to 884 million euros in 2021, with new disbursements gaining notable speed in 2026.
