National Vessel Traffic Management System Upgraded with €62 Million from ESPA
Funding has been approved for the modernization and expansion of the VTMIS system, featuring the upgrade of seven existing control centers and the creation of three new ones.
A joint announcement by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy confirmed the approval and signing of the decision to integrate the expansion, upgrade, and modernization project of the National Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS) into the ESPA 'Transport 2021-2027' program. The total public expenditure for the project amounts to €62,245,000, with the Hellenic Coast Guard Headquarters/Navigation Safety Directorate designated as the beneficiary.
The upgraded system will operate in accordance with the guidelines of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the recommendations of the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA). Its goal is to monitor, control, and regulate vessel traffic in real-time, enhancing maritime safety, environmental protection, and search and rescue operations.
Under the plan, seven existing control centers in Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrio, Patras, Antirrio, Corfu, and Igoumenitsa will be upgraded. Additionally, three new control centers will be established in Thessaloniki, Elefsina, and Neapoli Voion, utilizing an open architecture to allow future technological expansions.
