Italian Education Minister clarifies cap on foreign students in classrooms

The Italian Minister of Education, Giuseppe Valditara, clarified the government's plan regarding the student cap introduced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Speaking to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, Valditara explained that these limits will not apply to foreign students who have attended nurseries or successfully completed primary school cycles, as they are assumed to possess adequate language skills.

The measure will target only those students who do not speak Italian well. According to ministry data, there are just over a thousand classes with newly arrived foreign students who do not speak the language, mainly in primary schools, where specialized teachers have been hired. Meanwhile, there are 34,000 classes where foreign students represent at least 30% of the total enrollment.
