Alonissos Ranked 5th on Global 'Not Hot List 2027' for Sustainable Tourism
Alonissos has been included in Intrepid Travel's annual list of ten lesser-visited destinations highlighted for their sustainable practices.
Alonissos secured the fifth spot in the global 'Not Hot List 2027' by international tour operator Intrepid Travel. This annual ranking features ten lesser-visited destinations that possess the necessary infrastructure and readiness to accommodate more travelers under sustainable terms.
The selection highlighted the island's marine environment protection initiatives and the operation of the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades, which protects the Mediterranean monk seal. Additionally, the Underwater Museum of Peristera, developed around an ancient 5th-century BC shipwreck as the first of its kind in Greece, was prominently featured.
Local circular economy initiatives also played a key role, such as the municipality's participation in the European LIFE-IP CEI-Greece project for waste sorting. Furthermore, a targeted program to reduce plastic bag use has been in place since 2015, reinforcing the island's status as a model for responsible tourism.
